The SMS Academic Controversy SMS messaging has caused controversy in a number of areas of society, with one of the main areas being the world of academia. In Japan, a similar incident took place at the Hitotsubashi University in December 2002. In this case, 26 students were failed by the university for accepting exam answers through their mobile phones. Incidences of cheating with SMS messaging are not isolated to only these two universities. In fact, teachers at all grade levels are battling this high-tech form of cheating. Partly because of the abuse of SMS messaging, as well as the overall distraction mobile devices can cause, many schools will no longer allow mobile phones to be brought into the classroom. Denying the use of mobile phones at schools, however, has created additional controversies because mobile phones have become such an integral part of most people’s lives. Parents depend upon them to keep in touch with their children and college students use them to help keep on top of increasing demands. Striking the perfect balance is a challenge schools need to meet.
