The Growth of Text MessagingText messaging is a relatively new phenomenon, and has only been around for the last twenty years. As the use of mobile phones has increased, so has the use of text messages. In fact the growth in text messaging has grown exponentially in the last ten years. Text messaging is normally shortened to just texting, but almost everyone with a mobile phone has the ability to send a text. In the vast majority of phone the text message can be created using one hundred and sixty characters or spaces, which is then sent using the Short Message Service also known as SMS. If a message that is longer than one hundred and sixty characters then it is normal for the mobile phone to just send more than one message. Most people though will have no idea how text messaging works, just that it does. As long as the messages arrive there is actually no need to understand how messages work. As previously mentioned the growth in text messaging has been fantastic. In 2000 there were an impressive seventeen billion text messages sent worldwide. Four years later there had been five hundred billion messages sent by worldwide users. There is an estimated one hundred and twenty texts sent for every member of the world’s population, although not everyone on the planet has a mobile phone. Texting is to be found all around the world although it is most popular in Asia, Europe and North America. Of the continents Asia makes most use of texts, with inhabitants of the Philippines sending more texts that the whole of Europe put together. With about twelve texts sent per person per day, it equates to about a quarter of all texts sent around the globe. The prevalence of people texting does annoy some people, and it is not uncommon to find people seemingly spending every conceivable moment undertaking text messaging. You will find people texting on buses, walking down the street and even in restaurants. Whilst most people find it less annoying than people speaking on their mobiles, it is still seen in many cultures as an anti-social form of behavior. The commonality of text messaging has led to comments of a new texting addiction, and it is an unfortunate fact that some people cannot go a few hours without sending a text. Text messaging though does have a competitor when it comes to sending messages from the mobile phone. Asia does have a large number of text messaging users, but in Japan the use of text messages has dropped. This fact is down to the growth of mobile phones that has the ability to send and receive emails, which offers greater flexibility, especially in message length. At the moment though text messaging is a very useful model of communication and until all mobile phones have the ability to send and receive emails, it is going to be used. Text messaging will be the major competitor to email as the most common form of communication around the world. Also please feel free to look at more useful information about SMS.
