Text Scamming Millions of people have cell phones, the percentage is probably more than every second person, but they are not always as great as they seem. Sure, cellphones are cool; they can do so many things like take pictures, videos, play music, send photos, receive photos and these days some are even talking maps, when you tell the phone where you would like to go and it gives you all the necessary directions. There’s nothing better than having the best phone at school, everyone wants to see it and know where you got it, but besides cellphones being so “awesome” they can be expensive and dangerous. There are many different reasons why cell phones are dangerous, but we are only going to discuss one of the dangers and that is money. Have you ever “signed up” to a mobile service but have no idea how or when you did so? Your account just keeps going up and up and you cannot explain it, nor can you unsubscribe from this service you magically joined. This is what some companies do; they sign you up without you knowing and take money from you, they do this by using sms software. And the worst thing is, they won’t let you unsubscribe! But then you think, “How did they get my number?” It was quite simple actually, sms software. There are many ways in which these deceiving companies can retrieve your cellphone number. Some of these ways include; You visit a website on the internet where it tells you that you can get any ringtone you want for free. You go to the site and they weren’t lying there it is, free ringtones. But what you don’t see is the fine print at the bottom of the page that tells you once you enter your cellphone number to receive the free ringtones, you will receive new ringtones every week for the amount of whatever Pounds. And they usually aren’t shy when they tell you what it costs. On most of the competitions that you enter, whether it is to win a car or a shopping voucher, in the space you have to fill in your details, they ask for your cellphone number. But what you don’t see is the small print that tells you that by entering the competition you are also subscribing to a messaging service that is going to cost you per week or per month. Another thing that happens quite often is they send you a sms asking if you would like to subscribe to a service, send “yes” or “no” to this number…….then, even if you send a message back saying “no thank you”, the other end of the conversation is a computer, that computer cannot read so they are going to take it that you said yes to the subscription because you replied. From there you will be stuck with the subscription because they do not tell you how to unsubscribe. This is how some of the cellphone businesses operate. They will do anything to get money; even if it means lying, misusing sms software, or stealing.
