 Understanding SMS Messaging

Understanding SMS messaging is actually easier than you might think. When you punch in a message on your computer or mobile device, it is sent immediately to a Short Message Service Center (SMSC). Here, the message is sent to the store-and-forward mechanism.

With SMS messaging, both mobile terminated messages sent to mobile handsets and mobile originating sent from mobile handsets are supported.

Once the message is sent to the Short Message Service Center, the center tries to send the message to the recipient. If the recipient cannot be reached, the center keeps the message in order to send again later. In some cases, however, the center only attempts to send the message once.

SMS messaging is not a guaranteed method of getting in touch with the recipient. There is always the possibility that the message will get delayed or lost along the way, particularly if the message is being sent from one network to another. If knowing whether or not your message made it to its destination if particularly important to you, you might want to consider requesting a delivery report. This report will let you know when the message reaches its destination.

When a transmission takes place between an SMSC and a phone, it can go through a variety of different protocols, such as SS7. In addition, messages are sent with a MAP operation with a limited payload length. This payload is limited by the constraints of the signaling protocol, which comes to 140 bytes or 1120 bits. This equals approximately 160 seven bit characters, 140 eight bit characters, or 70 sixteen bit characters. Certain languages, such as Slavic, Arabic, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese all are written in sixteen bit characters.
